. an ex-navy s.e.a.l. murdered at a gun range in texas. allegedly by a troubled former marine. this comes in the middle of america's debate over gun control. and rising concerns about troops returning home with ptsd and reena ninan is on the story. good morning to you. >> reporter: dan, good morning. he was 38 years old and this morning his colleagues are stunned that the man who is self-labeled as the most lethal sniper in u.s. military history was gunned down in texas. he was the man dubbed as america's deadliest sniper. a member of navy team s.e.a.l. 3 shooting targets the length of 21 football fields away. chris kyle who served four combat deployments and earned seven medals of bravery. shot at a texas gun range along with his neighbor. >> tap, racked, bang. >> reporter: audiences know him from account fares and stripe" and from his "the new york times" best-selling book, "american sniper," reportedly shot down more iraqi insurgents than anyone else. >> you were so well known by the iraqi insurgents you were fighting they put a $20,000 bounty on your head. is that right. >> yes, sir.

the latest on the shocking death of legendary american sniper and u.s. navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle. he was gunned down at a texas shooting range, allegedly by a marine veteran he had been trying to help. authorities released the 911 call made just after that shooting. and abc's cecilia vega is here with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. these 911 tapes are really chilling. you can hear the suspect's sister rushing to get out of her house. she says her brother admitted to the shooting at the range. and she was terrified he might turn on her next. >> listen. my brother just came by here. and he told me that he's committed a murder. >> reporter: laura blevins was terrified for her life. in just-released 911 tapes, she frantically says her brother, eddie routh, had showed up at her texas home saturday, and made a startling confession. >> he said that he killed two guys. they went to a shooting range. he's crazy. he's psychotic. i don't know if he's being honest with me. >> reporter: police say the 25-year-old former marine snapped, turning his gun on two men at shooting practice with
's a former l.a. police officer and u.s. navy reservist. police say they believe dorner is responsible for killing monica quan, the daughter of a retired lapd captain. >> she had such a big heart. why take her away from all of us? >> reporter: the 28-year-old beloved college basketball coach was gunned down sunday, along with her fiancee, keith lawrence, while they were sitting in his car. >> a particular interest at this point in the investigation, is a multipage manifesto, in which the suspect has implicated himself. >> reporter: the document, allegedly posted by dorner on an internet message board this week, blames retired lapd captain randy quan and other officers for getting him fired from the department. the manifesto claims that dorner was fired for repeated abuses. it names a dozen officers, threatening to find officers' homes, their spouses' workplaces and children's schools. one posting reads, i never had the opportunity to have a family of my own, dorner writes. i'm terminating yours. >> dorner's whereabouts are currently unknown. we're considering him armed and dangerous. >
that christopher dorner is their worst nightmare. dorner a former navy reservist is an expert maxman. he claims to have explosives and a rifle capable of slicing through armored cars from long distance. >> you have a trained member of the military who's taking that experience and terrorizing this entire region. >> by all accounts, the 33-year-old led a normal life. >> was always smiling. always positive and upbeat. the kind of person that yo would want as a friend. >> reporter: dorner joined the military and later the police out of a sense of honor. investigators believe behind the smile is a burning hatred for the lapd which he called corrupt and racist. his battle began with 2006 shortly after he became a cop, when he says that he witnessed a female officer using excessive force. for years he appealed the decisions. sources say that he recently snapped after exhausting all avenues to get his good name back. >> you're always on duty when you're a cop. >> reporter: she's dorner's former girlfriend. >> it's scary situation. i have the phone on 911 when i open the door to my apartment. who's next
